BreakThrough Cancer Trust - Zambia

"Awareness is life, Hoping is coping"

BreakThrough Cancer Trust (BCT) was established in 2001 by the late Ursula Hickey, the late Maureen Lewanika and Rosalyn Mulenga.  These women had a vision to improve the quality of life for women diagnosed with cancer by providing them with resources and support.  Although Breast Cancer claimed the lives of both Ursula and Maureen, the mission of the Trust, now chaired by Mary Vantra,
continues with the help of survivors and volunteers.

With limited information, facilities, equipment and medication available or accessible to the less fortunate in our society,  our primary role has been to establish a system where we provide free medication, masectomy bras and prosthesis to those in need  (treatment for cancer is beyond the reach of most patients and survivors), to promote education and awareness among the public, policy makerS and health professionals.  We provide counseling to cancer patients, their families and caregivers. We are committed to generating funding for critical programs that are in desperate need to be materialized.

We have adopted and refurbished Ward B21 at the University Teaching Hospital where Breast and Cervical patients receive inpatient care.  We accomplished this through donations, corporate sponsorships and fundraising events.
